Jonathan Kagan is partner with Baldwin, Kagan & Gormley, and has been a trial attorney for over 17 years, representing individuals and businesses in state and federal courts throughout Maryland. He focuses on cases involving contracts and torts arising out of business and real estate transactions as well as complex personal injury.
Mr. Kagan’s practice also involves counseling companies and individuals in employment matters and representing his clients before administrative agencies, the courts, and in arbitration. These matters include anti-discrimination laws, wage and hour statutes, the Family and Medical Leave Act, unemployment claims, and other laws governing the employment relationship, including the review and negotiation of employment and severance agreements and the investigation into employee claims of discrimination and harassment.
Mr. Kagan has been voted by his peers as a “Top Lawyer” in What’s Up Annapolis in the areas of litigation, business law, real estate and personal injury.He has also been recognized in “Super Lawyers” for Maryland as an outstanding business and employment litigator.
Mr. Kagan graduated cum laude from Boston University and with honors from the University of Maryland School of Law where he was assistant editor of the Maryland Law Review and a member of the Moot Court Board. After graduating from law school, Mr. Kagan clerked for the Honorable Robert H. Heller, Jr. on the Circuit Court for Anne Arundel County. He is licensed to practice in Maryland, the United States District Court for the District of Maryland, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit.
Mr. Kagan is a former president of the Anne Arundel County Bar Association and member of the Board of Governors of the Maryland State Bar Association. He is currently the Treasurer of the Litigation section of the Maryland State Bar Association. Mr. Kagan is a fellow of the Maryland Bar Foundation and the American Bar Foundation.
In addition to his litigation practice, Mr. Kagan has been an adjunct professor at the University of Maryland School of Law where he taught legal writing and appellate advocacy. He is also a certified mediator and serves as a settlement conference officer for the Circuit Court of Anne Arundel County.
Mr. Kagan and his family are residents of Annapolis and he is active in the community serving as a commissioner on the Ethics Commission for the City of Annapolis, and on the Board of Directors of the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Kagan also serves as co-chair of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation’s largest annual fundraiser, Bands in the Sand, held every June in Annapolis.
